new paintings
prakash patel

28 May - 15 June 2013

We welcome Prakash Patel direct from showing works at the Sarjeant Gallery in Whanganui.

His new paintings are stunning examples of his ability to conjure up the colours and textures of Indian sari patterns while placing them within the complexity of an overall abstraction.

Prakash deserves to be recognised as one of our foremost abstract artists. Since 2006 when the Sanskriti Residency took him to India (with the resulting show at the NZ High Commission in New Delhi), Prakash has diligently worked from his studio in Whanganui. A full show at the Sarjeant Gallery (Karma Cloud) in 2007 showed Prakash as a maturing artist of unique vision. Since then his shows have concentrated on loose canvases: "I prefer them that way as they are based on fabric designs and I like the scroll-like qualities...".
