welcome to my world
joon-hee Park

4 - 25 November 2014

If painting hadn’t become her life, Joon-Hee Park theorises she may well have been a zoologist or a vet. As a child her greatest hope was that someone would give her a small pet whale.

In Welcome to My World, quirky, whimsical animal companions fill the frame and take on surreal, life-size personalities. A flying octopus, galloping moles - all command our fascinated gaze as they romp through hectic, dreamlike adventures, or simply sit and bear silent witness.

As in previous shows, the artist includes herself in every scene. “The act of painting is therapy for me... I paint what I want, what I need and who I want to be. I can do anything in my painting... I actually do feel like I am inside.”

Welcome to my World in Joon-Hee’s fifth solo show at Orexart  since 2004. The paintings are based on her dreams, made all the more poignant by the loss of her much-loved white cat called Peter, who returns in this series as a chaperone and guide.

There is the sense of travelling bravely into a great unknown, with animals as wise counsel and comfort. In Queen of the Night a Lilliputian Joon-Hee is riding in a walnut cart.” I don’t know exactly where I’m going but Peter has the map, so it should be somewhere awesome.”

Joon-Hee’s firm grip of the Auckland coastal landscape grounds each image with an almost recognisable sense of place while many of the works explore scenes of night time and moonlight.

“I think I have become more free, curious and playful, more adventurous than before. I definitely had more fun creating this series.”

Joon-Hee was born in 1979 in Korea, emigrating to New Zealand in 1993 after the death of her renowned surrealist painter father, Hyun-Kyu Park. She completed a BFA and an MFA at Elam, graduating in 2003. She currently teaches painting at Westlake Boys School on Auckland’s North Shore.
