melancholia
kathy barber

7 - 25 May 2013

On paintings by gentle men and gentle women from a Victorian writer who was said to sigh more than he wrote, "They would make a melancholy man most merry, and him that was already merry, much merrier than before, a lover more enamoured, a religious man more devout, a non-religious man more determined. And of gentle women this desire to find love in all the wrong places... oh what more can we say?"

Barber's ability to show light as if shining from a celestial window, or flickering through water gives the paintings a special quality. Slowly and meticulously executed, the transparent glazes she uses create images that hover between the known and the imagined. There are eight paintings in the show and each is as different as the light or feelings they depict.

This is Barber's eighth solo show and follows on from her last three brilliantly reviewed shows at OREXART.
