That summer
in the new land
richard mcwhannell

22 November - 10 December 2016

Richard McWhannell was born in Akaroa in 1952 into an Anglican farming family. After moving to Christchurch, he attended Christ’s College.  Turning to the uncertain vocation of art, he studied at Canterbury School of Art, under Rudi Gopas, Doris Lusk, Bill Sutton and Don Peebles.  However, it was his friendship with Toss Woollaston, outside the School - and much against Gopas’ wishes, that instilled in him a strong faith in becoming an artist.

In his initial work he explored the subject of the Canterbury terrain with painterly emphasis, but alongside that he developed a growing interest in portraiture. The year he graduated, McWhannell painted the ruggedly constructed Homage to Woollaston (1972, Waikato Museum). It foreshadows a career-long preoccupation with self-portraiture, landscape, and figurative painting. McWhannell’s current work carries on along these lines drawing on history to create unexpected narratives.

McWhannell admits there is a lot happening in these paintings. His notional brief for the body of work involves his family as original settlers on Banks Peninsula and the pastoral landscapes of childhood memory. Starting points for what is a landscape seen through the filters of our time, cut out, rearranged, inhabited by history, but re-imagined for today.

He summarizes by calling his new work, '... contemporary takes on art historical ways of working'... The rest is left up to us, to mull over the details, to let our eyes wander, picking out a figure here, a pukeko, a cat, cows, dogs, Queen Victoria, a line of trees, hedges, a manicured landscape worthy of Capability Brown, Bill Sutton, Doris Lusk ... and Richard McWhannell, all holding hands perhaps.
