selected works
richard mcwhannell

9 - 27 February 2016

For over four decades, Richard McWhannell has produced compelling imagery of both observed realities and imaginative scenes, with much overlap in-between.  While widely known as an accomplished portrait painter, Selected Works reveals (as does the recently opened survey show at Pah Homestead), the breadth of an intriguing career.  Selected Works also includes cryptic allegory, striking portraiture, landscape and diverse ‘self-portraiture’ spanning the 1970s to the present.  His paintings border the grotesque, mournful, contemplative, puckish, ambiguous, and absurdist.  Sir James Wallace was one of the first major collectors to appreciate these qualities, and he subsequently embarked on a long association with the artist from the early 1980s onwards.

Selected Works represents a considered response to all aspects of Richard McWhannell’s long career and are chosen from his personal collection and in many cases are being shown for the first time.
