landscape
then & now

16 September - 24 October 2014

What is it about landscape painting that makes it so enduring? Is it our preoccupation with where we come from, or is it our desire to connect with and be comforted by the familiar? In any case, it's often through landscape painting that we recognise ourselves.

Landscape: Then & Now juxtaposes landscape paintings by mid 20th century painters including George Woods, Emily Jackson and Arthur Hipwell, with contemporary painters represented by Orexart including John Madden, Richard McWhannell, Peter James Smith, Richard Adams, Emily Karaka, Evan Woodruffe, Ross Lewis, Andrew Craig and Angus Collis.

Warwick Brown, author of Seen this Century: 100 Contemporary NZ Artists and two other books on NZ painting, will present a talk on the exhibition as part of ArtWeek about landscape painting’s enduring appeal to artists, collectors and the public, using the works on display to discuss the importance of painterliness and the artist’s vision.
