NEW PAINTINGS
paul jackson

18 October - 12 November 2016

With some fifty years as an exhibiting artist, Paul Jackson draws upon his strong feelings and memories of the country of his birth, and his joint Tongan/New Zealand heritage.

In his current show, he expresses admiration for the work of other artists such as Bill Hammond in Hat For Bill. He shows his support of the All Blacks through All Black, Only the Brave. He explores Christianity and the Maori culture using New Zealand cultural references; a pounamu cross and a Huia feather. Jackson’s version of a still life, Red Heart, alludes to the typically green landscape and cultural symbols of pounamu as he harkens back to New Zealand.

The artist’s mix of Pakeha and Polynesian makes his awareness, understanding and sympathy for tangatawhenua (Maori cultural references) a recurring, though not literal, theme in his work. These are his connections, his archaeologies, his ways to explore foundations both factual and fictional, remembered and re-imagined.
