Artist Statement

These paintings continue a theme of animal portraits and our interaction with them as subjects. In particular they focus on the notion of 'fight or flight'.

The state of 'fight or flight' is an experience which we have in common with animals. While the animal is perhaps acting on an instinct, for us humans, the moment of decision to stand and fight or run away is a conscious act. In depicting this moment in animals, we also attribute this consciousness to them.

The anthropomorphic nature of this interaction is especially apparent in pet portraiture. The visual power of a face on the mind causes us to unwittingly assign personality traits while trying also to empathise with them on a human level.
